The Jalandoni Memorial Elementary School (JMES) in Lapuz, La Paz is the lucky recepient of the Gold Quill-awarded project which aims to help teach the students in Reading particularly those in grade levels 2 and 3.

The program is implemented with the help of Rotary Club of Metro Iloilo (RCMI) under President Frank Andrada and the Iloilo Business Club.

Caltex in partnership with RCMI organized a team of volunteers who will do the task of teaching the pupils in Reading for four consecutive Saturdays. The volunteers include Caltex employees, RCMI volunteers and students from Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School, St. Paul University, and University of the Philippines in the Visayas.

Beneficiary pupils were also given books and reading materials.

Caltex Philippines Inc. Manager Marian J. Catedral said the project will be replicated in other schools outside of Iloilo City soon.

The Caltex Mentor Program won the Excellence Award for Community Relations category at the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Gold Quill Awards barely four months after it was launched. The project exhibited good communications planning and management skills and has proven results as shown from its strict measurement and evaluation process of non-readers into readers. The CMP was also a finalist in the 2004 Asian CSR Awards under the “Support an Improvement”, Education Category, chosen from 197 entries from 110 organizations in 15 countries.
