'No-el' in 2007 is a disaster
Former Pres. Fidel Ramos who attended the Council of State Meeting on January 24 told his colleagues that "No Election" in 2007 will be a great disaster to the Filipino people. Why is Ramos against extending the terms of congressmen and local officials to another three years after May 2007? Even the senators are opposed to the "No-El" allegedly maneuvered by GMA Con-Con handpicked delegates. FVR has not budged an inch in his opposition to the "No-El" since the Cha-Cha draft was presented to Pres. Arroyo last year. Why do the TRAPOS like to extend their staying in power when about 60 percent of them are no longer eligible for reelection by May 2007?
What is the rationale of the "No-el" in 2007? Why did the Con-Con majority delegates include the provision in the newly approved document? Was it deliberate? Was there a mysterious hand that wrote the "No-El" provision just to please the President? It is really an embarrassment to GMA considering that the Con-Con delegates were reportedly handpicked by the President. When FVR vigorously insisted that he was not in favor of "No-El" GMA kept silent about the statement of the former president.
With the very low approval rating of GMA in a reputable pulse survey since last year, the election of May 2007 might be unfavorable to GMA. Suppose the opposition will capture both the House and Senate in the May 2007 elections, including local officials, what will happen to her program of government? Both chambers will probably block the administration's economic, social and political measures and GMA will no doubt be crippled in governing the nation.
GMA's administration will be like an army without soldiers! However, if the elections in May 2007 will turn in favor of GMA with both houses of Congress supporting her, then she will govern the nation undisturbed and happy days will again return to the country until 2010 when her six-year term ends. If after the May 2007 elections, the Cha-Cha should have been approved and the parliamentary system will be the new form of government of the Philippines, there is a possibility that her allies in Congress will elect her Prime Minister-President. Then when that happens, the country will either be in turmoil again or experience prosperity and everybody will be happy and content.
What is in store for the future Philippines under Prime Minister-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, only God knows as He is in control of heaven and earth.
