The love of money
Considering that more than 50 percent of the residents in Metro Manila and nearby provinces are poor, the attraction of millions of prizes to lucky winners of the ABS-CBN Saturday show of Wowowee forced many indigents to risk their lives. The poor did not really go to the ABS-CBN show just to die but to earn money for their loved ones who seldom eat once or twice a day! The stampede was very unfortunate incident of the undisciplined crowd who rushed to the gate to get their ticket to the noontime popular show not knowing that more than 79 of them would die and hundreds would be injured. The Bible teaches us in Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from their faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through many sorrows." Acquiring money per se is not evil. The poor need money for their daily existence. The government which is supposed to give livelihood to the poor according to our Constitution has miserably failed. The corrupt government officials and cronies are the ones benefiting from the money which the people paid for their taxes. Instead of spending the millions of pesos and dollars stolen by dishonest government officials to worthwhile livelihood program which will benefit millions to poor Filipinos, sad to say, these corrupt "Christians" build mansions, lavishly spend millions in casinos, frequent travel abroad and build beautiful homes in the U.S. And Europe while millions of their poor countrymen suffer in wanton poverty. Again our Lord Jesus Christ teaches that "If you have done this to the least of the brethren you have done this to me." God is referring to the indigents.
The President, Congress and the affluent members of our society should address the problem of poverty in the Philippines. GMA may report to Asian, European and American nations that the Philippine economy has improved for the last several years but the problem of poverty has not been solved and millions of poor Filipinos wallow in abject poverty.
Why are the technocrats and bureaucrats sitting lazily in their palatial homes when right in their neighborhood there are people who seldom can eat even one meal a day. What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world through indecent money accumulation? As long as the higher ups in government will not change their moral values and live the Christian way there will be no better future for the Philippines. The crocodiles, vipers and snakes in our government are always ready to steal the people's money.
