Abandoned housing project a health hazard
Residents of Barangay Ungka I, Pavia, Iloilo have expressed concern over the health hazards that may be brought by the abandoned housing units in Iloilo City's socialized housing project located in the said barangay.
Barangay Captain Teresa Celiz of Brgy. Ungka I wrote Pavia Mayor Arcadio Gorriceta about their complaint. Gorriceta then referred the matter to the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iloilo. The endorsement was dated July19,2007.
Celiz, in her complaint dated July 15, 2007, said there are already confirmed dengue cases in the town of Pavia and they are afraid the Dengue-carrying mosquitoes will breed in the dilapidated houses.
"We are greatly alarmed because children are passing this area everyday on their way to Aganan-Ungka I Elementary School," part of Celiz's letter reads.
The abandoned houses and the tall bushes inside the property makes an ideal hiding place of persons with criminal intention, added the complainant.
Some people likewise used the housing units as "motels" for their immoral activities, Celiz further said.
Celiz said the housing project is also a big eyesore that "adversely affect our efforts to make a good impression of our barangay." She also blamed the housing project to have caused their defeat in several beautification contests.
On his part, Mayor Jerry Treñas told his deputy mayor former Vice Mayor Guillermo De la Llana to initiate a clean up of the area after receiving a copy of the complaint letter.
