Treñas urges city residents to practice composting
Mayor Jerry Treñas encouraged city residents to practice composting of bio-degradable materials to lessen the waste materials transported to the Calajunan dumpsite. He said it is very easy to compost the bio-degradable materials particularly the household wastes.
Treñas said it is very easy to compost bio-degradable materials such as twigs, fruit peels, vegetables and rotten fruits. A hole is just needed to accommodate these waste and transform it to fertilizer. This will both benefit the residents and the city government.
Barangay officials have already been taught on how to implement composting procedures. He hopes that the idea were shared to their respective residents. This could help the city in its waste disposal problem. The shredder at the dumpsite will likewise have a longer operational span if these materials are already segregated.
Recently, a fish kill occurred in Iloilo River and among the probable causes identified is the seepage from the Calajunan creek.
To note, the city government has reconstituted the Iloilo City Solid Waste Management Board (ICSWMB) to include new members.
The new ICSWMB is composed of Treñas as the chair; Ma. Luisa Segovia as the co-chair and official alternate; and Councilor Eldrid Antiquiera as the vice-chair.
The board members Marilen Locsin (chair of the Task Force Clean and Green), Director Bienvenido Lipayon of EMB-DENR VI, Father Rolando Haguisan from the religious sector, Engrs. Helen Sotomil and Aurora Lim representing the academe, Lydia Pendon (chair of the Iloilo City Hall Press Corps), Neonita Gobuyan from the press, general services officer (GSO) Agustin Sangrador, assistant GSO Raul Gallo, city environment and natural resources officer Noel Hechanova, city planning and development coordinator Jose Roni Peñalosa, city engineer Marito Amatorio, all Association of Barangay Captains presidents and representatives from the city police office.
