Int'l org to conduct mangrove reforestation in Escalante City
Island Volunteers, an International Non-Government Organization based in the United Kingdom is set to carry out a Mangrove Reforestation Project in Escalante City.
The reforestation project will start in June and will culminate in August 2008 in partnership with the local government of Escalante City.
The organization, spearheaded by its founder Kyle Wissett, aims to identify suitable reforestation projects which will benefit the local community and or the world at large while promoting cultural exchange.
Members of the organization are volunteers from Europe, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Mangrove, a tropical evergreen tree of tidal coasts, is common in the coastal areas of Escalante. The group's project then is to be implemented first at Brgy. Cervantes, where mangroves are feared to have disappeared gradually due to the residents' growing for wood used in their houses, for construction of fences, firewood and the conversion of areas into fishponds. Other possible locations for the next phases of mangrove planting are at Barangays Rizal and Mabini. (Escalante/PIA)
