Still enough jobs for returning OFWs—Roque
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) administrator Marianito Roque yesterday assured that there are still enough jobs for Filipinos in spite of the global financial crisis.
Roque was here yesterday as President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo graced the opening of TeleTech Iloilo Delivery Center at the 3rd floor of SM City Iloilo. The continuing expansion of Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) gives employment to overseas Filipino workers who are affected by the global financial crisis.
The expansion of the call centers will provide 35,000 additional jobs including to returning overseas workers. The OFWs can employ themselves in call centers. His statement was relative to one call center agent named Sharon who landed a job at the TeleTech after returning from Brunei.
Sharon is one of the call center agents who had the chance to talk to President Arroyo. The President, in her visit to the call center site spent time talking to call center agents.
The government is also offering alternative programs for OFWs other than the call center employment. There are entrepreneurships and livelihood projects being offered to OFWs. There are also other job opportunities in the country which could alleviate the Filipinos even during this financial meltdown, said Roque.
Meanwhile, President Arroyo immediately left Iloilo City and flew to Boracay for a cabinet meeting.
The plan of Mayor Jerry Treñas for the President to visit the Iloilo Flood Control Project which include the Iloilo Boulevard and Carpenters Bridge was not included in the President’s itinerary.
