PCG tightens watch on Iloilo ports
Expecting an increase in travelers to Guimaras for the Lenten Season, the Philippine Coast Guard has tightened its watch against ferries taking in excess passengers and overloading cargoes.
Commander Harold Jarder of the PCG-Iloilo station said he expects the number of travelers to Guimaras to swell on April 10, during the Pagtaltal sa Guimaras.
He estimates the number of travelers to reach 10,000 for the reenactment of Jesus’ crucifixion.
But he does not worry much about excess passengers or ferries overloaded with cargo.
There is enough number of ferries going to Guimaras, he noted, as he assured, at the same time, the devotees.
We have had no incidence of excess passengers or overloading of cargoes because there are more than ferries to transport those wanting to go to Guimaras, he said.
Besides, passengers already have a lot of options to take when it comes to traveling, he pointed out.
Nonetheless, Jarder stressed that PCG personnel will still be deployed to major ports.
Aside from the intensification of security checks in ports, PCG Help Desks will also be set up, Jarder told The News Today.
As part of the ’security blanket,’ he said that armed personnel of the PCG will be deployed to ports, along with K-9 sniffing dogs.
With intensified security checks, he advised passengers to check in earlier than usual.
Jarder reminded travelers to Guimaras that they are still mandated to wear lifejackets upon boarding.
PCG personnel deployed in ports are also under orders to ensure orderly boarding of passengers, he said.
