City gov't to distribute P1M free school supplies
The city government is set to give P1 million worth of free school supplies to students in the public elementary and high schools this school year.
The Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) is already on the process of procurement of the school supplies which include pad papers, ballpens, notebooks and crayons. The bidding, awarding and procurement of school supplies are being hastened just in time for the opening of the classes.
There are 42,000 pupils in 52 elementary schools and 22,000 students in 13 public high schools. Last year, the city government also spent millions of pesos for the purchase of school supplies provided to the pupils and students of public elementary and high schools. Free school bags were also distributed.
The giving out of free school supplies to public elementary and secondary schools in the city is part of the education program of Mayor Jerry Treñas. The free school supplies could help lessen burden of parents this school opening.
Non-government organizations, business groups and private individuals are also encouraged to donate free school supplies to public schools in the city.
Meantime, Treñas reminded all principals in the public elementary and high schools on the “no collection policy” of the Department of Education (DepEd) where no fees shall be collected from the enrollees.
The no collection policy of the education department has been effective for years. It is aims to provide free education to the poor in the country. The no collection policy was also meant to increase the number of enrollees every school year.
