Sapian’s 112th Independence Day Celebration

With the theme: “Kalayaan: Tagumpay ng Bayan”, the 112th Independence Day was celebrated with dignity and low-keyed splendor in the town of Sapian, Capiz. The celebration had a parade and reenactment of Independence Day. The occasion was led by the town’s conscientious mayor, Hon. Arturo “Turic” Orosco, Sr., Ph.D. and his ever supportive wife, Dr. Evangeline Oñas Orosco, and the local officials of the municipality.
Mayor “Turic” Orosco, in his Independence Day speech said, “Sa bagong panahon, ang kalayaan ay may ibat’ ibang kahulugan. Kalayaan mula sa kahirapan, kalayaan pumili ng mga uugit sa pamahalaan, kalayaan magpahayag ng sariling kuro-kuro at palagay, kalayaan sumamba ayon sa pananampalataya at maidagdag ko, kalaayan humiling, umasa at tumanggap ng kinakailangan serbisyo pambayan.”
As part of the 112th Independence Day celebration, a beauty and talent search “Mutya ng Kalayaan 2010” was spearheaded by the local municipal government and participated by young and talented ladies from the town’s 10 barangays.
The beauty and talent search is a brainchild of Sapian’s first lady, Dr. Evangeline Oñas Orosco. She said that the search for Mutya ng Kalaayaan will be institutionalized and every year thereafter the said beauty and talent contest will be held.
Mayor Orosco and Vice Mayor Ralph Odrunia, M.D, offer flowers at the Jose Rizal Monument.Meanwhile, Cerine Mae Osuma, who was sponsored by Vice Mayor Ralph Odrunia, was adjudged as winner by judges and declared as this year’s Mutya ng Kalayaan. Other winners are: May Den dela Cruz of Agtatacay, 1st runner-up; Sheryl Rose Marie Vidal of Majanlud, 2nd runner-up; Wilken Mae Benedicto of Dapdapan, 3rd runner- up; and Emy Oloroso of Bilao, 4th runner-up.
The winning candidates who got minor awards were: Dela Cruz as Miss Friendship; Benedicto as Miss Darling of the Crowd and Best in Filipiniana; Vidal as Miss Modeling; and Osuma, Best in Production.
The said affair was also supported by the staff of St. Francis of Assisi, the school run by the Orosco couple and founded by former Mayor Remedios “Nanay Meding” Oñas.
