Phoenix Picks “What comes around goes around, what goes up must come down, now who's trying, desiring to come back to me”. I probably loath myself sometimes to say this but Alicia Keys, a Grammy award-grabber and ‘ bootylicious ' RnB American singer knocks my senses every time she sings her Hindu- comtemporary -inspired “Karma” song aired on MTV or MYX. Blah blah blah … you reap what you sow and so you should sow the compassion within your heart because it bears fruit of righteousness, equality and love. Love? Blah blah blah … most people overuse this word for their own deceptive-egoistic motive. A friend of mine who professed to have the knowledge on tarot cards once said that I was destined to be a rebel and a fool chained in envious shadows of other people. True, I dream big, I love with all my heart and do things my own way. Indeed, life is a wheel and it turns upside down. As Mariah Carey used to say from her second number one Billboard single… “Someday, the one you gave away will be the one you've been wishing for”. Nuff ' said… Entertainment Pick 101: MTV Asia aids swept global compassion What if MTV Asia Awards that annually give honor for sensational popstars and singers converted the whole show into one huge fund-raising campaign for tsunami victims? Yes, believe me, MTV Asia in response to the calling of compassion and rebuilding the lives of the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia held an extensive campaign to raise funds and sympathy all over the world. In fact, a lot of music artists worldwide responded to this noble task of helping the helpless and vulnerable people in Indonesia , Thailand , India and many other countries devastated by the unstoppable tsunami that occurred last December 2004. Countless number of innocent children died and families were separated. Fear, hunger and desperation followed after the catastrophe. That is why my eyes were glued last night after I saw the late (not too late after all) telecast of the event on MTV Philippines. What was astounding and touching with the event is the unified effort of CNN as a premier news channel hand-in-hand with MTV to gather the voices of global music superstars to send ripples of compassion, unity and message of optimism towards the whole humanity. RnB superstar Alicia Keys hosted the unique show while various pop and rock music artists dedicated their effort to ask for help and support around the world that includes famous bands such as Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and Linkin ' Park. American idol Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias , Ricky Martin (who visited the tsunami victims), Ronan Keating and many others joined the campaign. In addition, Asian pop and music icons such as Asha Bosle of India performed; Jay Chow sang a sentimental song, Vanness Wu of F4 and a lot more participated. Whew! It's nice and blissful to imagine that singers are doing such noble acts for humanity beyond their usual task of grabbing music awards. As Ricky Martin said… “It takes time to heal the sorrow of the world but it will be easier if we begin now! ”. Television Pick 101: Y Speak lost in oblivion, SCQ sizzles & Nadine @ Robinsons
Whatever happened to Insider's hot news anchor Karen Davilla and hunky host Ryan Agoncillo's explosive Saturday talk show ‘Y Speak' still remains a mystery. I don't know why the ABS-CBN executives ended the TV program but the show was a trendsetter and a big leap towards equality and gender-sensitive issues. There's a lot of honesty and vigor in the show that inspired me to watch the talk show amidst my hectic schedule. Y Speak has the courage and bravery to speak the truth, relevant reality and things we need to tackle in order to know the essence of freedom of speech. That's why after the show disappeared, a lot of young people clamored and demanded to bring back the show. Oh yes, speaking of Sandara Park and her SCQ batchmates , they are doing fine in their Sunday afternoon series ‘SCQ Reload' because the storyline is quite unique and touching. Last Sunday I happened to watch one episode and its worth raving. Sandara and Hero's storyline is enthralling as it revealed another Hero counterpart in the name of Peter (connected to Sandara's past life in Korea ). Joseph, Melissa, Roxane and Joross are improving too in their craft. I think it's a nice and refreshing kind of show for young people to watch. Anyway, I've interviewed Starstruck avenger Nadine Samonte last Friday at Robinsons Place Iloilo courtesy of my good friend Clyde Clavero and Rofel Pareño who were all prolific marketing officers of the mall. The young star was so witty and amiable to me and my friends Cheaster and Charo . So, watch out for that exclusive chat on ‘ Controversion with Phoenix ' later on. By the way, Sandara Park 's soul and silhouette will be revealed on Friday on my otherworld showbiz column so watch out for it. Her letter was just a teaser! So, hasta mañana people! |
