LGUs tackle possible amendments to Local Gov't Code The members of Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) recently met at the Office of Political Affairs in Malacañang to tackle the concerns on the proposed amendment of the Local Government Code of 1991 (LGC). Mayor Jerry P. Treñas , president of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) said there have been proposals to amend the LGC to adopt with the current conditions. Among the issues discussed are on the distribution of Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA), mayors' control on the police and emergence of new cities, Treñas said. The law provides that after 10 years, the LGC should be revised and passed with amendments, Treñas noted. Meanwhile, Treñas bared the LCP will be having a meeting in Cebu on March 9. He added the agenda will include the league's approved resolution endorsing the member cities to pass an ordinance supporting the national ID system. The LCP has invited Secretary Angelo Reyes of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to brief the mayors regarding the national ID system. Treñas stressed they will also be looking into the current quality of education in the country. Likewise, the cities' executive chiefs will talk about the implementing rules and regulations of the Clean Water Act. |
