On the DOT The campus tourism information marathon The Campus Tourism Information Marathon project of the Department of Tourism Region VI is, at its 24th anniversary this year, perhaps the longest running domestic tourism campaign of a regional office of the Department of Tourism. This project has made the DOT Region VI an annual award-giving body through the presentation of Citation of Merit to participating educational institutions, campus publications, writers and photojournalists. Through the years, the citation of merit has sported the different promotional slogans/brands of the Philippines as a tourism destination. Among these slogans/brands were “ Fiesta Islands Philippines ”, “Islands Philippines”, and “WOW Philippines ” placed side by side with the Department of Tourism logo on the upper left and right corners, respectively, of the citation of merit. This year's citations carry the logo of the Department of Tourism and the slogan” I Love Philippines, Biyahe Na!”, the domestic tourism spin-off of “WOW Philippines ”. As a domestic tourism promotion project, the Campus Tourism Information Marathon was initiated in February 1981 by this writer who then was the Senior Tourist Receptionist under the supervision of Mr. Edwin G. Trompeta, Tourism Field Coordinator of the Department of Tourism-Iloilo Field Office. What started as a local initiative that included only a few schools in Iloilo is now a regional campaign the academic community is looking forward to particularly at the end of every school year. The mechanics of the Campus Tourism Information Marathon is quite simple. School publications are encouraged to include in any of their issues tourism news, features, photos and editorials pertaining to Western Visayas as a tourism destination. Based on the number of pages devoted to tourism articles, number of articles, writers involved, photos included and quality of inclusions, campus publications and writers are awarded citations of merit by the Department of Tourism Region VI toward the end of each school year. The office does not impose rules on what tourist attractions, facilities and insights to include and how they should be included in the campus publications. We leave these things to the sound discretion of the campus publication editors and their advisers. Besides, campus publications have their own peculiarities Next school year, the Campus Tourism Information Marathon will be celebrating its silver anniversary. We plan to start the campaign early in SY 2005-2006 and hope more campus publications will participate in this community-based tourism campaign. -0- WELCOME to all foreign and Filipino dignitaries who are in Iloilo City for the 60 th Anniversary Celebration of Panay, Guimaras and Romblon on March 17-18, 2005.
