Be on guard against diseases associated with water shortage—IPHO The Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) has asked the public to be vigilant against diseases associated with water shortage due to El Nino and the summer season. IPHO Office-in-Charge Dr. Patricia Grace Trabado said that usually during the dry period – when there is water supply shortage and some potable water sources dried up people tend to look for other sources for drinking. “We could not be sure if their water source is safe, it might be contaminated, more so if the container they are using is not clean and during transport it isn't covered,” said Dr. Trabado adding, “these factors may result to gastro-intestinal infection”. Thus, she advised the public to always observe sanitation and safety. “If ever there is no available mineral or purified water, especially for those living in the barangays just boil the water 20 –30 minutes or chlorinate it properly”, said Dr. Trabado. She disclosed that chlorine is available in most Rural Health Units (RHUs) in the municipalities. The RHU staff is also willing to assist communities for the chlorination of their water source. Dr. Trabado noted that in previous months there were areas in the province where an increase in cases of gastro-intestinal tract was reported. The result of the investigation of the illness points to the source of water. But this was contained after it was given appropriate attention by the concerned hospitals, RHUs and local government officials. Relative to water conservation, Dr. Trabado suggested to maximize the use of water through recycling but she warned that water purely for drinking must be maintained clean. Also she stressed the importance of proper preparation or handling of foods. “Simple handwashing and proper washing of the food we prepare can help a lot,” Dr. Trabado said. (PIA) |
