Anilao Anilao is one of the fast rising progressive towns of Iloilo province today. With the recent developments and changes in the town's physical features, Anilao is sure to become another town to watch for. One of the town's attractions is the beautiful and splendid Centennial Park located in the heart of the municipality. The name “Anilao” came from Anilao trees that abundantly grow in the said place. When the Spaniards arrived, Anilao was established as “pueblo” in 1756 with Don Juan Pagdalanon as the very first Capitan Municipal. After hundreds of years, Anilao was ruled by various Spanish officials that left deep roots of cultural heritage, sense of identity and Christianity among the natives. In 1903, Anilao and Banate were fused with Barotac Viejo as mother municipality by the American Government that replaced the Spaniard's colonial power in the country during those early times. But in 1918, Banate separated from Barotac Viejo bringing with her Anilao as an “arrabal”. Later Anilao became a separate municipality that marked the beginning of the road towards the town's quest for progress and cultural revival. Anilao has a distance of 40 kms. north from Iloilo City. Its land area is 10,057.70 has. and the main source of the town's livelihood is agriculture. Anilao is consist of 21 barangays while the population according to 2000 census is 22,170.
