GAWAD KALINGA
|
Concepcion, known for its beautiful and scenic Pan de Asucar Iisland and the best seafoods in the province, is not without poverty.
And with the help of Mayor Raul M. Banias, Gawad Kalinga was able to bring hope to the people by giving them shelter.
It was Deputy Executive Secretary Jose Tale who introduced Banias to Gawad Kalinga in July 2003. Since then, Banias never waivered in his support for the program.
He believes that adopting Gawad Kalinga is another opportunity to further the town's vision.
He then convinced the members of the Sangguniang Bayan authorize the donation of the municpality's 2-hectare property in Bgy. Loong to serve as the site of the project.
'Housing' gifts
Banias initiated the donation of ten houses. His daugther Crystal Gayle Banias, B&B Company, Board Member Victorino Salcedo II, Couples for Christ-Ajuy, Couples for Christ-Concepcion, Vice Mayor Elizabeth Salcedo and family, and the Manderico family donated a house each.
The LGSP donated three houses.
The spirit of unity and bayanihan in the whole town invited even more donors to pitch in their contribution.
Among them are the following agencies: the local government unit of Concepcion, Concepcion Polytechnic College, Technical Education and Support Development Agency (Tesda) , the Departments of Education, and Agriculture; and the University of San Agustin.
All supported the village through programs in health, livelihood, and the building of communal infrastructures.
The Singaporean and International Foundation also gave a house and facilitated the poultry livelihood of the village.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave 19 houses; Senate President Franklin Drilon, 20 houses; and Mrs. Leonor Lataquin, one house.
Gawad Kalinga Concepcion narrowed poverty.
It transformed lives and strengthened the people's belief that poverty can be solved.
It fought corruption and introduced new heroes.
The once hopeless poor now smile as each help build the others' house.
