Mayors affirm support for Arroyo By Ronilo L. Pamonag
Mayors of different cities in the Philippines have affirmed their support for President Arroyo amidst talks of an ongoing plot to unseat her.
The National Executive Board of the League of Cities of the Philippines passed Tuesday this week a resolution “(r)eiterating the League's unqualified support to the President…her entire administration and her programs of development, pro-poor initiatives for the Filipino People.”
According to the resolution, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas initiated the resolution. Treñas, LCP national president, was Ms. Arroyo's student in economics at the Ateneo de Manila University. Copies of the resolution will be distributed to the Office of the President and to both chambers of Congress.
“Recent events have again seen blabbing propagandists in an orchestrated attempt to fool the people with their lies and tales, unfounded charges, and extra-constitutional adventurism,” the LCP pointed out in their resolution.
The LCP also condemned moves to unseat the President.
“…the League of Cities of the Philippines National Executive Board, resolve, as it does hereby resolve:…to condemn, as it does hereby condemn, all the tell-tale lies and baseless innuendos propagated by individuals and groups who entertain nothing in their minds and hearts but those of their own vested interests, their political ambitions, and personal agenda.”
The LCP also called on “…all sectors to reject all moves to undermine our cherished democratic institutions, to unmask and disown all those who have so far done nothing but develop a culture of falsehood and deception, and to destroy the forces of evil that are behind all these moves, falsehood and deception.”
