Orphans of slain WV scribes get scholarshipSix orphans of slain journalists in Western Visayas have been given scholarship programs. They are part of the first batch-- consisting of 8 college students, 4 high school and 4 grade school pupils--of beneficiaries of what the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines calls “…a unique scholarship program offered to children of Filipino journalists slain since the last 20 years.” “The Bevil Mabey Foundation committed to give P1 million a year for five years to the program to support scholars' matriculation fees and allowances, while the Kasangga at Gabay Foundation committed to shoulder the staff expense for its implementation,” the NUJP said in a press release. The NUJP identified the six as Rynche Garcia Arcones, Therese Lorraine Grace Arcones, Kim Hinolan, Jose Nava, Noel Teneso Jr. and Kint Christian Hector Ureta. Rynche and Therese are the son and daughter, respectively, of Severino Arcones, a DYFM Bombo Radyo Iloilo commentator who was killed on October 17, 1989. Rynche is Arcones' son by Marlyn Grace Esperat of the Midland Review and who was killed March 24 this year in Tacurong. Kim is the ten-year-old son of Herson Hinolan, the Bombo Radyo Kalibo, Aklan commentator who was gunned down November 13 last year in Kalibo. Jose Nava, on the other hand, is the son of Visayan Life Today's Josef Aldeguer Nava, who was killed August 12, 1988. The elder Teneso was cub reporter for DYFM Bombo Radyo Iloilo when he was killed on July 1, 1985. Lastly, Kint Christian is the seven-year-old of Rolando Ureta of DYKR in Kalibo, Aklan and was killed January 23, 2001.
