Tips for police aspirants

I am not surprised when somebody asks me to share with him the secrets of passing the police recruitment program. It is expected. Having written topics about the Philippine National Police, my readers would inevitably think that I am the authority in that aspect. Besides, having myself championed the recruitment program 4 years ago, I have indeed learned several strategies that will help one to survive the highly competitive selection process of the PNP without much sweat. This is what I'm going to share for those who dream of embracing the profession.

Becoming a police officer is a long process. You don't simply wake up one morning and tell yourself, “I will join the police service”. And, in an instant, you will have that blue uniform, a badge, a service firearm and a relatively wholesome salary package! Rather you have to work it out for years. You have to earn a degree - four-year course - and passed the eligibility examinations given by the Civil Service Commission or the National Police Commission.

But, now, having these qualifications does not yet guarantee an applicant to make it in the recruitment program. The degree and eligibility constitute only a little percentage in the passing probability. Thus, what more an aspirant needs to fulfill a dream is my present concern.

Gone were the days when a person becomes a police officer by mere declaration of the Mayor. Today, though most of the requirements cannot be subject to waiver, the influence of the Local Chief Executives has still considerable impact in selecting the would-be police officers. But, aside from “MGC (Mayor, Governor, Congressman) eligibility”, one has still other leeway to make it in the police recruitment. Here are my suggestions:

1) Make good your academic ratings . Teachers always underline that grades are not of their making, but of students. It is then important that, while in school, one has not only to aspire to graduate but also to comply the academic requirements with good grades. The PNP is now working so hard to improve its image, and one way to do this is to have in its fold young professionals who did well in their scholastic performance. Generally, grades indicate the level of discipline, hard work and sacrifice of a student. Those are same fundamental characteristics the police aspirant must have.

2) Get satisfactory eligibility rating . Whatever examinations you take, endeavor to get satisfactory result. Passing is not enough. It has to be remembered that the highest rating is the safest. The PNP needs the best and brightest; therefore, be one to belong!

3) Improve your public speaking ability . This is not only limited to self-confidence. Many applicants have it. They are full of self-confidence and that's all! Public speaking necessarily includes proficiency in English language and the ability to present one's idea logically. These constitute the establishment of good impression during the panel interview, - a crucial part of the process; it being the last!

4) Maintain a healthy lifestyle . Physical fitness is indispensable in the police service. Constant exercise is necessary in the preparing oneself in the strenuous training for neophyte police officers. Agility test also requires the said preparation. But, what is important is for a police aspirant to avoid smoking cigarettes; excessive drinking of liquor and taking illegal drugs. Remember, almost one-third of the applicants failed in the physical examination.

5) Establish good public rapport . Having good personality is an advantage. Be friends of everyone. Make friends with the police officers in your place. And, you wont worry what the background investigation will speak about you.

Therefore, if you desire to join the police force, keep in mind my suggestions. I tell you, there is no other easy way!
