DOT campaigns for security of touristsTaking a cue from the statement “security is everybody's business”, the Department of Tourism (DOT) together with other participating agencies last week launched its project dubbed ‘STOP' (Safety of Tourist Operation Program) and Philippines' TURISTA (The Universal Recognition in the Security of Tourist Awards) program. STOP is under the initiative of DOT Secretary Joseph ‘Ace' Durano, the office of the Undersecretary for Security and Political Affairs who leads the advocacy campaign on assuring tourists' security while in the country. It is a joint undertaking with the National Defense College of the Philippines Department of National Defense (NDCP). STOP aims to enhance disaster management and security capabilities among tourism stakeholders who are the main beneficiaries. Secretary Durano said the project is timely since it can help prepare tourism stakeholders in case of unexpected natural calamities like the recent tsunami, and in cushioning effects of travel advisories and other threats that affect the industry. To further strengthen the participation of different sectors, DOT also launched the Philippines' TURISTA (The Universal Recognition in the Security of Tourist Awards) program. It was designed to give recognition to those who have shown outstanding contribution to the safety and security of tourists. This is together with the Junior Chamber International Philippines (National Jaycees), Rotary International 03810 (Philippine Rotary Club), Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), and the Philippine Travel Agency Association (PTAA). Philippines' TURISTA is a search for individuals, private corporations, local government units and foreign embassies that have made remarkable involvement in terms of protecting tourists' well-being. Prizes await winners of Philippine TURISTA 2005. |
