When?
I believe the word “when” is a secondary symbol for man's insatiability. Many times in our lives we would catch ourselves thinking to ourselves, “When will I start school?” When we do start school, we again ask ourselves, “When will I graduate from my primary education?” and so on and so forth. We never stop asking ourselves when the next wrung in the ladder of life will be and when we do get there, we do not stop there, but ask again when the next will be. While we can easily say that this attitude also serves to keep our ambitions alive, taken the other way, it actually trivializes our existence. Instead of really enjoying life, we are too preoccupied with what will come next. Life planning is a wise thing to do, but living each day at a time is a wiser way to enjoy life to the fullest. When we wake up in the morning, we should begin our day by telling ourselves that when night falls, life should end for the day. This attitude will help us do all that we can during the day, and not yearn for another day to finish whatever it is that we have left unfinished. Some people might think that this is a very “happy-go-lucky” attitude, but on the contrary, it is actually a means of remedying man's insatiability. We are never satisfied with what we have, and the best way to fill ourselves with the calm of satisfaction is by yearning for nothing. If we live each day one day at a time, we have no expectations, we take everything as they come and we do not anticipate anything. When one expects one is easily frustrated and disappointed when those expectations are not fulfilled. Hence, to avoid the pain and misery of frustration and disappointment we must learn never to expect anything. The secret to happiness and a very satisfying life is not in when we will receive our next pay check, or when we will have the job of our dreams, it is recognizing what really matters to us in life, more than the glittering temptations of materialism and commercialism. We all dream and hope to have everything we have ever wanted in life, but did we realize that we never really dreamed of having the intangible “nothing” that represents everything we ever really wanted? “Nothing” is not emptiness; nor is it the absence of something if we take it to the more enlightened level. “Nothing” like happiness is just a concept of thought. There never really is “nothing” to begin with except when there was really nothing at the beginning of time. The “nothing” that represents a holistic and integral feeling of satisfaction is the total surrender of oneself to a greater power. If we acknowledge that we are nothing, that we have nothing, that we need nothing, as long as we live like the sparrow that flies aimlessly, guided by the highway of divine instinct, we move closer to total self happiness and satisfaction. This is the secret to a higher level of understanding. Many of us don't really understand life, so we often go back to the trivial “when”. The most miserable of all questions to ask is “When will life ever mean something to me?” This is a question that a person with distorted values would ask himself because we do not have to wait for the time for life to acquire meaning because from the moment we are conceived, life meant something already. If we return to that basic meaning of life, then the direction life will go for us will surely become clearer. The problem with us people is that we seek to define the most simplest of things with the most complex of definitions when in fact we need not define what has already been defined by existence. A person's quest for normalcy is a futile effort because no matter how medically aberrated we are, the mere fact that we have life is reason enough for “exaltive” gratitude. Simplicity is a value most of us overlook. We do not figure – we are mere specks of dust in this vast universe, and it is comforting to know that despite our insignificance in the grand sphere of existence, Someone up there knows exactly how many hairs we have on our heads, or how many times we have fallen and risen again. This is what we should all recognize; the true mark of satisfaction is the statement, “I am what I am, no more, no less.” We are who we are because we have life, and because we don't need to know “when” and “how”, and “why”; and because to us, there will never be a tomorrow, only a “TODAY”. Tomorrow is merely today anticipated, and yesterday is merely today lived well. Be rational; be insane…every once in a while!TTFN! Thanks Sheen! Welcome to RI!
