DOLE conducts Construction Safety Training for Safety Officers
Every worker has the right to safe working condition, but in some industries particularly in construction most, if not all, work sites are far from being safe as evidenced by the number of accidents on the job, which resulted to permanent disability or even death of workers. In response to this need, the Department of Labor and Employment Region 6, in collaboration with the Occupational Safety and Health Standards, will conduct the 40-hour “Construction Safety Training for Site Safety Officers” on August 22 to 26 at Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City. This training, which aims to improve the knowledge of participants on the measures to prevent accident and illness in construction sites, is a requirement set forth in Department Order No. 13, Series of 1998. DOLE RO6 Director Carlos Boteros said that this Order requires all safety officers of construction companies to undergo this kind of training. He added that this training is very helpful for safety officers of construction companies to avoid the occurrence of accidents and illnesses at work. Accidents in the construction are “recurring phenomena” due to several factors such as, workers' lack of awareness on safety measures and rules; failure to strictly follow the company's safety measures; and, companies' failure to implement these safety measures at work sites, among others. Construction, based on statistics, shows the highest rate of accidents among industries. In fact, five construction workers die each month due to accident on the job.
