The Space Between
Art is relative but its uniqueness is in the stories behind each masterpiece. Although there are many forms of art, each one is dependent on the artist's perception of things and experiences. These perceptions are seen on the artist's expression in whatever type of art. Be it performing, musical or others each has a personality.
One particular art that is both unique and elusive is Visual Arts. For some it's only the mixing of colors and blending it with the others. Or it could be a stroke of a pen in a paper as conceptualized in a form. Whatever it may be, a visual artist is not limited by his perception or expression. Rather, he forms the objects of his imagination, perception and other elements to produce an artwork, like the works of Joseph Firmeza, Vic Fario and Carlo Juntado in ‘The Space Between'. The Space Between is an alternative artist run space in Barangay Bantud, Laguda Subdivision, Lapaz Iloilo City. The three artists exhibit their recent works at the place since July 31 to September 27. THE ARTISTS
Joseph Firmeza's works are all inspired by “time and space”. His artwork focus on his observation of life especially his own. He believes time moves faster and faster everyday and life gets more and more complicated. In one of his work dubbed ‘Days', he presented the irony of life in considering ‘time'. Both with the people who think ‘Time' is running fast and yet they have “so many time for leisure…that people get to have time for smoking and coffee.” And labels it as their ‘past time', yet they complain for too little time. Firmeza's work are also noted with an in depth reflection of life.
Children are always a favorite subject of Vic Fario. In his recent works it depicts the children's innocence in life. That these kids may not be adults but they are sensitive to what's happening in their world. Fario captured this innocence in his works. And like a child, all of us dream and that dream is always beautiful and nobody can take it away from us.
In contrast, Carlo Juntado made his work as a reflection of how Filipinos who are migrating abroad inspire him. It also deals with the exodus of Filipinos to foreign lands in the hope fulfilling their dreams. It also aims to incarcerate the harshness of reality and present a real face of migrant Filipinos. Other than these, his works also depict not only the hardships but also the triumphs of overseas workers.
