Roman Sanares on art and Math
One finds contentment in his life when he has passion for something and puts his mind and heart to it. People who have discovered their love for the crafts--music, arts, literature etc., have provided entertainment and have shared solace to other people around them.
Often, we feel good after immersing into the experience of reading a book, watching a theater performance, movie and others. It is also because of this positive energy within that artists, musicians, writers and dancers find the fulfillment in what they do. Even if one is professionally involved in a different field, an artist would never let it get in the way of his passion.
Fifty–four year old professor Roman Sanares is one of the many who enjoys the best of both world by being a university professor while also being expressive about his ingenuity in the field of arts. Most considers him as “the one with a multi-faceted mind” because he also dances and teaches ‘Statistics’ in UPV – Miag-ao since 1985. He is a mechanical engineer and has been into visual arts with the influence of his father’s wood works (carpentry).
The Set Designer
Sanares also enjoys set designing theater productions. Production designs under his belt include Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, King and I, Flower Drum Song, The Diary of Anne Frank, all of which have been applauded by Ilonggo audiences. Compared to painting or accepting commissioned works, Sanares reflects more of his art when doing set designs. He believes it needs more focus, like having a mental picture of the scene. The mood, time and occurrence of the scene are matters of priorities in making the set. As part of the crew he studies the whole script and discuss pros and cons with the director. For him, a well organized set is an effect of cooperation with the director and understanding the plot as well as the whole story. With his discipline he became one of the most sought after set designer.
The Style
Artists have their own methods to convey their artwork. Some may make portraits, still life or abstracts. Each touch of their brushes gives life to a once empty canvass, paper, wood or depending on the artist’s approach. With the effects of light and color, artists attempt to record visual reality. The works of Sanares normally speak of universal subjects like ‘Mother and child’. He also enjoys subjects that bring hope and joy. These are usually captured in his nature- inspired works.
In his younger years his works were about social realism. Then, his subjects were often the fisher folks, farmers and the less privileged. All of them were a part of a series of paintings that carried a mood of ‘change’ for the world. Yet in time, his works were modified to bring light and happiness. Now his works, though still in neutral colors speaks of fulfillment, pleasure and elation.
An earth color painting with a touch of cubism is definitely a Roman Sanares work. He considers his artistic inclination as a gift. Capturing real life drama in his canvass gives him satisfaction. He may be labeled with different titles but he is just someone who wants to “paint and paint” when he retires.
On the other side, he is known to be a lenient teacher, and one who is well-loved by his students.
