Nutritionists, dieticians confab tackles resource mgt for food security
The Visayas convention of the Philippine Society of Nutritionists-Dieticians (PSND), Inc. which will be held here on October 26-27, 2005 takes for its theme: “Ensuring Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security Through Effective Resource Management."
The conference will gather together dieticians and nutritionists, Nutrition Action Officers, Municipal Health Officers, Local Chief Executives, Development Planning Officers, representatives from the academe, nurses and other professionals from allied fields.
Regional National Nutrition Council Coordinator Nona Tad-y said that with such an array of expected participants, the conference could very well serve as a venue for identifying effective strategies in resource management so that the country can achieve sustainability and nutrition security.
Ms. Tad-y said that the regional convention for the Visayas is PSNd’s contribution to the continuing education of region-based nutritionists so that they will be updated on trends and thrusts in Philippine Nutrition.
The opening ceremonies will be participated in by Department of Agriculture OIC Regional Director Jindra Linda Demeterio and Regional development Council Chair Gov. Sally Perez.
The Technical Sessions for the first day will include topics on Population, Education, environment and Nutrition, Global Trends in health and Nutrition, Managing Foreign-Assisted projects, Fortified Rice and its Implications on Nutrition Security.
For the second day, the technical sessions will include discussion on Jumpstarting the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition through Effective Resource Management, Nutrition Interventions in disaster Stricken Infanta Project, Effective Resource Management During Disaster and Local Initiatives on resource Management During Disaster.
Capping the technical sessions on the last day are the Challenges in Implementing Infant and Young Child Feeding, Promotion of Breast Feeding and Proper Weaning Practices and the Power of Advertising in changing Behavior of Children.
The PSND, through its President, D. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, said that the convention is made regional rather than national in order to cut on costs and to focus on particular regional experiences as valuable inputs.
Dr. Agdeppa, through the Regional Nutrition Council, is strongly encouraging the participation of primary stakeholders in the mission of upgrading the nutrition quality of the Filipinos.
