2 new bridges for Iloilo City sought
Iloilo City -- The Sangguniang Panlungsod recently approved two resolutions requesting President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to include in her Tulay Ng Pangulo project the construction of the Ticud Bridge in La Paz and Sta. Rosa-Dungon bridge in Jaro district.
The two resolutions was authored by Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo, chair of the committee on justice, rules and ordinances of the Sangguniang Panlungsod. The request will be channeled through the Regional Development Council (RDC).
In his resolution, Peñaredondo said Iloilo City is trying its best to keep face with the on-going developments in its various districts and is continuously developing its road and transport network system.
He said the replacement of the present dilapidated Ticud-Caingin Bridge with a new Bailey bridge would surely promote business and trade to Panay island via the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex and central business district of the city.
The completion of the Dumangas-Iloilo Coastal Road has brought about rapid developments in the north-eastern coastline areas in terms of housing projects business, industrial ventures and the projected establishment of the St. Paul University, said Peñaredondo.
The coastal road is the easy access of traders and commuters coming from the northern coastal and central towns of the province of Iloilo to the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex and the central business district at the city proper area without passing through heavy traffic at the middle of Jaro and La Paz districts.
While, the construction of the two-lane (12 meters wide) Sta. Rosa-Dungon Bridge will ease the traffic and hasten the travel of commuters in Mandurriao and those coming from Aleosan and southern coastal towns passing thru Mandurriao.
Mandurriao district is the only district with only two access roads. One form the old and narrow Carpenter's Bridge which links Molo district and Mandurriao and the other one is the access in Q. Abeto Street linking Jaro and Mandurriao.
Presently, Mandurriao district is heavily populated because of the presence of several subdivision projects and it is the main entry and exit points of all the vehicles from the towns of Alimodian, Leon and San Miguel. It is also connected to the town of Oton and other southern towns in Iloilo and whole province of Antique via Pakiad road.
The two access roads connecting Mandurriao to Molo and Jaro districts are heavy with traffic from 7 am to 7 pm, much more because the Iloilo Airport is situated in Mandurriao. It is imperative that a bridge be constructed at Sta. Rosa, Mandurriao crossing Dungon reek and will link the Benigno Aquino Avenue and Jaro via the PHHC area.
