Mass tubal ligation slated in Sara
Sara, Iloilo -- A free mass bilateral tubal ligation for mothers in the fifth district of Iloilo would be conducted in Sara, Iloilo this coming November 29, 30 and December 1.
Elizabeth Ferraris, executive director of Northern Iloilo Alliance for Health Development (NIAHD), said the project is a joint effort of the nine municipalities of the fifth district, the Department of Health and the Mary Stops Foundation.
Mary Stops Foundation is based in Cebu City and is composed of volunteer Filipino doctors.
Ferraris said around 200 mothers are expected to avail of the free service which will be held in Sara District Hospital.
Tubal Ligation, also known as female sterilization, is a surgical operation in which the fallopian tubes, tubes that extend from the ovaries to the uterus, are closed off. The operation permanently prevents pregnancy by making it impossible for the sperm to reach the egg.
It is said that tubal ligation is almost 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy.
Ferraris said a normal tubal ligation operation costs P5,000 which ordinary families could not afford.
She said, mothers who are qualified of the free services should be above 30 years old, have at least five children and a resident of municipality belonging to the fifth district.
The surgical operation would be performed by volunteer doctors from the Mary Stops Foundation.
Ferraris said the mass tubal ligation is part of the NIAHD's continuing program on population control.
