Rational Insanity
Eternal youth?
I'm 28 years old, and kidding aside, friends who see me always say that I don't look my age. Even a friend of my father's said I was more 19 than my age. There is no eternal youth, and eventually, the sparkle in my eyes and the luster of my skin will fade away, but it's nice to know that somehow, age is a bit delayed in my case. Many people would like to know what I do and how I do it, so here are ten practical things you may do to set back the years for a little while:
- Take Vit. C regularly. Vitamin C helps in the regeneration of our skin cells as well as the healing of damaged skin. A good amount of vitamin C in our diet will give us pinkish, lustrous glowing skin.
- Stay away from facial care products. Many of these products claim that they moisturize, hydrolyze, and clear off dead skin. The truth is, our skin normally does these things, facial care products accelerate the process, so therefore, instead of preserving the youthfulness of our skin, facial care products can give us temporary skin suppleness, and hasten the ageing process instead of slow it down.
- Get some sun into your system. Exposure to the sun for a few minutes every day can give us healthy skin and improve dermal circulation. The best times to get a dose of sun are at 6-9 AM and 3-5 PM, when the sun is not directly above us.
- Hygiene is imperative if we want healthy and glowing skin. Stay away from very strong and scented soaps. Use warm water at the beginning of your bath, to open your pores and gently scrub your skin (do not use strong abrasive items such as plastic scrubs, etc.) with coarse cloth, or bimpo, then end your bath with cold water, to close the skin pores.
- Stay away from junk food and food with lots of preservatives. These preservatives release free radicals into the blood and contribute to skin ageing and deterioration.
- Calcium can improve the strength of the skin as well as its elasticity. Stock up on calcium rich food such as cheese, milk, and seafood. Remember, these are not wonder drugs or magic pills, we have to include these in our regular diet.
- Green leafy vegetables can contribute to healthy skin and outlook. Iron-rich vegetables like ‘alogbate' and kamote tops are the best choices. Always make sure that vegetables should not be overcooked, otherwise, they lose their nutrients very quickly and eating them would yield no benefits.
- Stay away from cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke irritates the skin and causes pores to dilate resulting to coarse facial skin and increased incidence of facial skin disorders such as acne and discolored patches.
- Alcohol can significantly affect normal processes in the skin cells. Increased consumption of alcohol can cause skin deterioration, discoloration, and loss of surface water because of the dehydration that alcohol causes. This can also cause skin dryness and loss of skin elasticity as well as hasten the ageing process.
- Of course, the most important is to keep a cheery disposition about you always. It is true that smiling contracts lesser muscles than frowning. Stress can release hormones into the bloodstream that accelerate cell death. Laughing is also very good, because it releases good kinds of enzymes into the blood that give us the feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction.
