BFAR composite team helps assess oil spill in Semirara
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR- Central Office) has set up a composite team of six persons to conduct surveys and gather scientific data to help determine the effects of oil spill to the marine resources in the Semirara Island in Antique province.
Atty. Benjamin Tabios, Assistant Director for Administrative Service of BFAR-central Office said that "part of the composite team are divers, who will also assist the DENR's team in assessing the oil spill's effect on the coral reefs condition, fish abundance and the sea grass".
Tabios was in Iloilo City during the National Workshop on Sustainable Philippine Fisheries Agenda.
It may be recalled that the oil spill occurred in December 2005 when the NAPOCOR's Barge 106 ran aground due to the inclement weather. Concerted efforts between the government and other concerned sectors help prevent the further spread of oil spill.
Tabios said that the BFAR is now sampling soil up to one meter in depth and likewise trying to determine the effects of oil spill on the fish catch.
"We are also taking samplings of water at depths of three meters, five meters and ten meters", Tabios said.
According to reports the oil spill had heavily affected the mangrove forest on the eastern part of the island. Also affected were the sea grasses, coral reef, marine life and their habitat and the livelihood of the fisherfolks.
Tabios further said that as soon as the BFAR shall have completed the data gathering, "we will present it to the public and make corresponding recommendations".
