6th interactive museum of West Visayan traditional arts and crafts
The Center for West Visayan Studies (CWVS) of U.P. Visayas in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) cordially invites everybody to its 6th Interactive Museum of West Visayan Traditional Arts and Crafts, which will be held on March 7-8, 2006 at the Little Theater Grounds, UPV Iloilo City campus.
The interactive museum will present crafts and local delicacies that are not only traditional or indigenous but are already in danger of being abandoned due to modern day preference for Western products and food. It is a move to recognize local craftsmen and delicacy makers who have survived the onslaught of Westernization and competition from foreign economic and technological dominance. A selected sample of craftsmen and delicacy makers will demonstrate their crafts to viewers to instill appreciation and to make learning experience more interesting and enjoyable. There will also be a sale of finished products.
This year, the interactive museum will feature 12 local crafts and delicacies that are representative of the six provinces comprising the West Visayan region. These include patadyong and hablon weaving and calamayhati and baye-baye making of Miagao, bandi and butong-butong making of San Joaquin, bamboocraft of Maasin, bolo and knife making of Badiangan, pottery making of San Miguel and Mandurriao, and bibingka making of Molo, all from the province and city of Iloilo. Antique will be represented by mat and basket weavers of Pandan and Tobias Fornier while Capiz features its woodcraft from Roxas City. Guimaras will showcase its famous miniature boat and galleon making from Buenavista and Aklan, the famous pina and nito weaving of Kalibo. In lieu of piaya making, which will not be available during the festival day, a barquillos making will be showcased.
Come and interact with our craftsmen and delicacy makers and learn the traditional art of weaving, cooking, and fashioning tools and local materials. Discover the best of our surviving local culture in the 6th Interactive Museum of Traditional Arts and Crafts.
