Stop, end the waste!
Without going through the merits of the proposal to effect changes in the Constitution, the PROCESS undertaken and pursued vigorously by the administration, by way of the so-called "people's initiative", insults and tramples on our basic sense of decency as citizens of the country.
Laid bare and unadulterated in our midst, the administration spends public money, extracted heavily from us, to fuel government machinery, thru the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to establish a need, as expressed in the alleged signatures, for changes in the fundamental law, with the Commission on Election (Comelec) as a willing verifier of such need, preparatory to a plebiscite, with a time frame in place (July this year).
In the context of an unresolved political crisis dwelling on the legitimacy of the mandate bestowed upon the President, and the attendant erosion of her credibility and her ascendancy to govern, as well as the demolition of all other democratic institutions, for the sake of the President's survival, plus the consquent economic crisis, a valid question is raised: Why the haste?
Furthermore, and more importantly, a legal block stands in the way. In a 1997 precedent, until late controlling, thus part of the law of the land, to which we bow as adherents to the "RULE OF LAW", the Supreme Court permanently enjoined such a process, in the absence of an enabling law to implement it. The move is out of step. The scarce resources of government could be put into better use. As citizens of this country, who directly bear the costs and consequences, we call STOP, END THE WASTE!
