1 killed, 1 wounded in San Remigio encounter
One was killed and another was wounded in the clash between the members of the 31st Reconnaissance Company of the Philippine Army and believed to be members of a private army in San Remigio, Antique.
A sketchy report from the military identified the fatality as Epifañia Cabaya while the wounded was identified as Abelaro Cabaya. It was not immediately known on how the two victims are related to each other and what happened to their other companion.
The bloody incident took place at Barangay Panpanan, San Remigio at about 5:00 in the morning of May 6, 2006 when a group of soldiers led by Lt. Auguis encountered three civilians in Barangay Panpanan which is a far-flung barangay of San Remigio. The place could be reached only through a UHF radio. As to date, there is no reported injury or fatality on the government side.
The firefight between a platoon of soldiers and the three civilians lasted for 35 minutes. The changing of fires ceased when the barangay captain of Panpanan negotiated with the members of the Philippine Army.
The government troops recovered from the area one carbine rifle with serial number 6322307 and with 25 live ammunitions and one homemade shotgun with one ammunition.
No details were released on how the victims were able to possess such firearms particularly the carbine rifle as soldiers are still conducting a follow up operation in the area.
