Murder raps up vs 'war-freak' cop in school killing
Murder raps are in the offing against a policeman who shot and killed at close range and in broad daylight a teacher inside a State University campus. This, as yet more administrative and criminal cases are set to be lodged against him and his alleged business partner for attacking a reporter of GMA TV 6's Ratsada news.
Two others from Bombo Radyo likewise fell victim to the police officer's wrath that generated anger and disgust from members of the local press and top provincial officials. (See related story)
The teacher's assailant cum murder suspect, Police Officer (PO)2 Henry Lego has now been disarmed and arrested by fellow police officers following a hot pursuit operation minutes after the Monday morning shooting. He remains detained at the lock-up cell of the Calinog Police Office, the very same police station he was also assigned. His arrest came after police operatives were informed that he sought refuge in the house of a town councilor in Lambunao.
His hapless victim, Moises Durigo was a respected member of the faculty of the West Visayas State University (WVSU) in Calinog, Iloilo. Motive of the killing was an unresolved karaoke bar incident over the weekend. The unsuspecting teacher apparently got the ire of PO2 Lego after getting himself into an altercation with the cop's business partner, government teacher Prime Rose Lapating-Alcobendas.
Calinog Mayor Alex Centena assured of immediate action and resolution of the killing as he disclosed of PO2 Lego's appalling history of violence.
Centena when reached by Bombo Radyo confirmed PO2 Lego's unsavory past that reportedly caused him out of his previous assignments in the municipal police offices of Sara and his hometown, Lambunao, Iloilo.
Such as the Calinog Mayor also disclosed of the romantic liaison of said cop turned murder suspect and Alcobendas, an English teacher at the Calinog Comprehensive National High School.
Immediately after PO2 Lego opened fire at the teacher, students and other witnesses scampered into safety as said cop calmly walked outside the university campus and fled on board his motorcycle. Security personnel of the university told reporters that PO2 Lego was allowed entry with his armalite rifle after telling them that he was in the area for police visibility.
Yells were then heard throughout the school premises after the first round of gunshots were fired as calls for help were made. At least ten students sent text messages to radio stations to report the crime as breaking news came in thereafter.
Efforts to revive Durigo failed where he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds caused by PO2 Lego's M16 armalite rifle.
Police Regional Office 6 regional director Chief Supt. Doroteo Reyes II told Camp Delgado reporters that the full force of the law will be imposed on the Lego case as he assured of no whitewash in the ongoing investigation.
Alice Durigo, wife of the murdered teacher vowed to pursue the case against her husband's attacker as she appealed to authorities to hasten PO2 Lego's prosecution.
Radio accounts heard the assurance of SPO1 Nilo Campos of the Calinog Police Office that murder raps will be filed at the soonest possible time.
