Silay City's annual fiesta coincides with the Philippine Independence Day celebration, with a series of significant events and cultural presentations. This year's festival begun with the 5th Silay Independence Day 14K Ancestral Homes Run which took off from the city's plaza going north boundary of Silay City and E.B. Magalona back.to plaza going south to boundaries of Silay and Bacolod and back to Silay Plaza.

There were around 79 participants for men and women categories to which winners awarded cash prizes. Free registration and food were provided to participants -- thanks to Silay City Mayor Carlo V. Gamban, Mrs. Maridel Locsin Gamban, Dr. Roberto R. Ledesma (PROSPORTS) one of the running event's organizers and also to Vice Mayor Jay Jalandoni. The other exciting event was the trisikad race which showed the endurance of the city's trisikad drivers and enthusiasts.

There were other competitions enhancing the city fiesta and enjoyed by spectators -- tourist and guest. After the sporty events comes the parade of one hundred thirty lechon (130) -- that delicious traditional specialty of Filipino's along the main thoroughfares of the city. This is the second year that the city hosted the parade of lechons. Next year, Silay will be celebrating its 50 years as a city.

The progress and success of its annual fiesta owes much to the cooperation of the inhabitants and the support of its local government. Silay City has more than 50 barangays and villages, and economically thriving on their coasting trades with neighboring sugar producing towns.
