Rationale of Aquaculture Week
The SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department responds to the needs of the Philippines and Southeast Asia for responsible aquaculture and sustainable development. SEAFDEC FishWorld is dedicated to the science and environment education of the general public --- children, adults, students, teachers, researchers, public officials, tourists, local residents, etc. --- particularly about water, aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, fisheries and aquaculture, ecotourism, conservation, and the aquatic sciences.
Aquaculture Week seeks to build understanding and appreciation among school children and teachers in Panay of the research and development work of SEAFDEC AQD and the relations between the environment, aquaculture and fisheries. Aquaculture Week 2006 promotes knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of (i) the importance of aquaculture to nutrition and economic development, (ii) importance of ecosystems and biodiversity to fisheries and aquaculture. Five contests are held for elementary schools and six contests for high schools.

Schools Invited to Aquaculture Week 2006
Invitations to Aquaculture Week 2006 are sent to the Principals in early June 2006. Students, pupils, teachers, and parents are expected to work together and do background research, practice drawing and presenting, and make all related preparations for the quizzes and contests in July. Information materials and sample quizzes are provided to all schools. Reply sheets with contestants' names must be returned as soon as possible before Friday, 21 July so the FishWorld staff can make the necessary preparations.
