LGU, academe tie-up to boost Capiz livestock sector
Roxas City -- Agriculture and fishery modernization has become one of the top priority agenda of Capiz Governor Vicente Bermejo in his last term as governor of the province.
Under its economic agenda, particularly on livestock development program, the province aims to increase livestock production using appropriate technologies, infrastructure support and extension services.
According to Dr. Bede Ozaraga, Dean of the Capiz State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, the opening of the veterinary medicine course in the province is a timely support of the school to the development agenda of the governor, particularly on livestock development program.
Dr. Ozaraga disclosed that in Western Visayas, CapSU's School of Veterinary Medicine, which is located in Dumarao, Capiz, is one of the two schools that have the said course offering.
He explained that the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program is a 6-year professional course designed to produce graduates capable of engaging in animal health management and performs functions related to veterinary public health, animal welfare, and food animal production.
The offering of such course here provides also ready access to personnel assistance and laboratory facilities for livestock, poultry and aqua raisers in Panay Island, particularly in the province of Capiz, he said
He stressed that as a Doctor of VetMed, one has greater employment opportunity in the local government units, national agencies, academe, private entities as well as in the private practice of profession.
Meanwhile, Dean Ozaraga announced that of their 11 students who took the National Veterinary Admission Test (NVAT) given by the Commission on Higher Education in Cebu City last April this year, 10 students have successfully passed said admission test. This gives CapSU a passing percentage of 91 percent.
The College of VetMed in Capiz is now on its fifth year with a total population of 63 students, he said, expecting some 10 graduates next school year.
