Health in the fast lane
Young professionals like us rarely give any attention to our health. You might be wondering why I was missing from the pages of TNT last week -- well, I was in the peak stages of the common chicken pox. While I was quite thankful to have finally contracted the disease which seemed to evade me during my childhood and teenage years, lying in bed and trying very hard not to scratch the itchy blisters served as a wake up call for me. It was a wake up call telling me to be more conscious with my health.
Now, two weeks after I contracted chicken pox, I am on my way to recovery and would probably be back in the office this week. However, with us young professionals, the threat of illness from something as common as the common cold to things more scary like cancer and other incurable diseases is a threat that is as real as our very busy and hectic schedules. It is therefore quite understandable that we all take time out of our busy schedules and give our health some attention. On the other hand, it is very unavoidable for us yuppies to ignore matters of health. This neglect is most of the time a result of life in the fast lane. I believe that while making health a priority is a top priority (redundant, hehe), there is nothing better than being physically and mentally fit all the time. Medical science has proven that a strong resistance is always a plus when keeping diseases away. After all, an ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure.
Anyway, what things can we do to always keep our immune systems in tip top shape? There are basic things to consider when minding our health. We should always avoid stress because science has shown that stress lowers our resistance to disease very dramatically because of the secretion of certain hormones. Extreme climactic conditions also serve to weaken our immune systems. Extreme cold, high humidity in the air, and extreme heat are some conditions to keep away from. Sometimes we tend to overlook these things because of our busy schedules, but at least, being extra careful is better than having to pay for expensive medicines.Stocking up on citrus fruits and other fruits in particular is better than pill popping. Although having multivitamins handy is also for good measure, good and healthy food is always better than the artificial stuff we get from multivitamins. It's also wise to stay away from places where there are lots of people when we feel that we are tired or stressed. In this state, we have our defenses down and since most common diseases like the flu, colds, other respiratory tract infections, and most bacterial infections are easily spread through bodily fluids like mucus and saliva, we would most likely contract these diseases especially in places like the movie theaters, bars, malls and all other fun (but bacteria infested places).
Then there's the issue of bad sleeping habits. Our body needs ample rest to be able to regenerate and and renew its ability to fight disease. It is a known fact that a normal person requires eight to ten hours of sleep every day. What we don't know is that sleeping at night is leaps and bounds much better than compensating for lost sleep in the day. If a change in sleeping schedule is inevitable, then exchanging your eight hours in the evening for eight hours sleep during the daytime will do, but in as much as the normal eight hours a night is possible, we should always opt for the convention. Finally, another thing we should all remember when trying to keep our health in good shape is dehydration. Too much work and stress can deplete the fluid that we have in our bodies and weaken our resistance, therefore it is very important that we keep taking in as much WATER as possible. Fruit juice will be just as good especially with the additional nutrients and vitamins, but we should try to stay away from alcoholic drinks, drinks that contain too much sugar and too much sodium. On the side, we should also have a regular exercise schedule to keep our hearts and lungs healthy all the time and always maintain circulatory integrity.
Well, I hope this has been enlightening for all of you guys, so that unlike me you wouldn't have to stay awake in your bed for two weeks trying to comprehend why a terrible itch could not be scratched and why God created a terribly itchy bacteria that would not go away for two weeks, no matter what you do! Be rational; be insane...every once in a while!TTFN!
