DILG cites Pavia barangay tanods
The group of Barangay Tanods of Brgy. Aganan, Pavia was declared as the Most Outstanding Barangay Tanods in Western Visayas for this year 2006 winning P10,000 and a plaque of recognition.
The search was launched by the Department of the Interior and Local Government 6 (DILG 6) in coordination with the Regional Management Coordinating Committee, ABS - CBN - Iloilo and the Rotary Club of Iloilo to give recognition to the best performing Barangay Tanods in the region. The Barangay tanods are the frontliners in maintaining peace and order and public safety in their respective communities.
The search's awarding ceremony held last September 7, 2006 at SM City Iloilo was one of the highlights of the culmination activity of the region in line with the 12th National Crime Prevention Week observance this year.
The awardee composed of 20 members bested entries of other municipalities coming from the towns of Ivisan, Capiz, La Castellana of Negros Occidental, Nueva Valencia of Guimaras, Pandan, Patnungon, and Caluya, all of Antique and two cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.
Also, the winner is Pavia's Model Barangay Tanod for three (3) consecutive years (2003, 2004 and 2005) and placed in the top three during the Metro Iloilo Development Council (MIDC) search for the same years. During last year's DILG's Provincial Search for Outstanding Barangay Tanod it was also declared 2nd runner up. Last July 2006, the group emerged as the Provincial Winner in this search and became Iloilo's entry for the Regional Search and made it to the top.
The group's success is attributed to their unity and cooperation as well as support of their local officials.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in one of her previous speeches, noted the important role the Barangays Tanods play in promoting socio-economic growth in their areas.
She said the Barangay Tanods are needed in deterring the commission of crimes and are vital in thwarting threats to community peace and security.
Currently, the government's top concern is to crush all terrorist elements in the country as this is the only way to push through with the goal of effectively turning the country into a haven for investors and tourists.
On the other hand, Carlito Manzan Jr. of Oracon, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras was named as 2006 Most Outstanding Barangay Tanod during the awarding ceremony. He received a P5,000 check and a plaque of recognition.
