Rational Insanity
How well do you love Hiligaynon?
It's natural - anybody from Western Visayas, whether currently or formerly residing in should love Hiligaynon to the highest level possible. Hypocrisy is the appropriate word for people from Western Visayas who claim that Hiligaynon is something to be ashamed of. Assuming that there are no hypocrites among those of us from this part of the country, I would like to try and test how deeply in love we are with this language. If you can answer the following ten questions correctly, then your love affair with our very own language is confirmed. Go on, dive into it.
1. Give at least three Hiligaynon words that mean 'to carry', each word, although meaning 'to carry' refers to where the item is carried.
2. Give at least two Hiligaynon words that mean 'to pinch'.
3. Translate "kakabakaba ako" into Hiligaynon.
4. "Bungkaras" is one of the many Hiligaynon words that does not have an English translation. Give an English phrase that approximates the meaning of this Hiligaynon word.
5. "Hikaplos" is a new contraction of two Hiligaynon words, give the two words used to create this contraction. (credit of "hikaplos" given to "Balikbayan Box" by Bryan Argos)
6. "Matampait" is a new contraction of two Hiligaynon words, give the two words used to create this contracted word. (credit of "matampait" given to "Langit sa Tasa" by Marcel Milliam)
7. True or false - The western equivalent of 'ASWANG' is 'WITCH'.
8. What does "binalaybay" mean?
9. What word in the Hiligaynon language is a direct translation of "light rain" in the English language. Clue: this Hiligaynon word is also used to mean a newly grown plant or sprout.
10. "Ginoo" and "Diyos" are two words referring to 'God' in Hiligaynon, give at least one other word.
Hey, guys, don't worry, the answers will come out next week. Anyway, I just want to say a few things before we wrap it up for this week -- when I first discovered I could write, I felt I was one among those who belonged to the least benefited individuals of society; later I confirmed that indeed, I was, but my love for the craft did not wane. A TRUE writer does not seek any recompense, and when I say ANY I mean ANY. Friends will try to dissuade you. Most will try to talk you out of your calling. Your pieces may not earn you the fame you so year for. Worse, many of those around you will tell you that you are not good enough. I had it all; and now I can truly say to all of you aspiring writers out there that all those things people say to you are TRUE, but whoever said that the TRUTH cannot be subjective? The only thing to remember dear fellow writers is that no matter what we achieve, no matter where we might end up later on, humility should always find its way into our hearts because we are useless and pointless without humility. Humility is what gives us the power to help and assist those who need us. Humility is what gives us the drive to be patient with those who cannot live up to our standards and most important of all, humility is what gives our pieces the heart to be read, to be appreciated, and, most of all, to be felt.
