On world peace
(This writer would like to share with our readers his recent speech during the installation of the officers of the Knights of Columbus, Arevalo Council on their Pearl Anniversary under the theme: World Peace)
World peace -- your theme, is a tall order. It has been the aim of mankind since time immemorial. After the World War II in 1918, the League of Nations was formed "to end all wars". But in 1938, World War II erupted. After that holocaust which affected our own country, the United Nations was organized again "to end all wars". But we see nations warring against each other.
Yes, world peace is really a tall order. But to me, the bottom line here is individual peace. It starts with peace with God. Then it spreads to peace with family, then community peace, then national peace, and ultimately, world peace.
How can man be at peace with God first? Of course by obeying the commandments of God -- love of God and of neighbor. When a person is at peace with God -- he can sleep very soundly at night. His conscience does not disturb him.
Of course, not to commit a sin is easier said than done. But this should not discourage us from hoping for peace with God. For He has provided for this "to err is human" situation. In His infinite mercy, He has established the Sacrament of Penance. So, let's go to confession where we can make a contrite repentance for our sins. In this Pearl year of your Council, purify yourselves as white as a pearl as a starting point for you to aim world peace.
Let us not be afraid to approach God to ask for His forgiveness. Many a great sinner than we had become great saints -- Mary Magdalene, Peter the Apostle, and Agustin of Hippo.
Really, world peace is a tall order. But Pope John Paul said "Be not afraid". Yes, let us not be afraid that we are only few -- just an insignificant drop in the sea of world community. Let us remember that Our Lord started only with twelve Apostles.
