More Capiz students to avail of scholarships
Roxas City -- Capiz students can look forward to more opportunities to avail of scholarships as the government has set aside 1.12 billion pesos for scholarship programs next year, as announced by House Deputy Majority Leader Eduardo Gullas.
He said the scholarship fund was contained in the 1.12-trillion-peso national budget for 2007 that was recently passed by the House of Representatives.
In Capiz, under Technical Education and Skills Development Authority's (Tesda) Private Education Student Financial Assistance (PESFA) since 1997, about 1,800 Capiceño students have availed of the benefits under said scholarship program.
TESDA Provincial Information Officer Julie Baraquia disclosed that every year, Capiz has about 205 scholarship slots intended for high school graduates who are interested to take up vocational technical courses.
Baraquia said that among the benefits granted to PESFA scholars are the P4,500 for the tuition and other school fees per semester, P500 monthly allowance, and P250 book allowance per semester.
A PESFA scholar receive a semestral education assistance of P7,250 per student, or a yearly budget of P14,500, she said, adding that for the 205 scholars for the province, the government has an allocation of more than P2.97 million fund.
Next year, 200 million pesos has been set aside as scholarship fund for the Tesda to finance 13,800 students enrolled in private vocational schools.
The government has also allocated some P441 million for the scholarship program of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) to sponsor a total of 34,475 college students, P341 million for the Science Education Institute of the DOST to support 10,598 scholars, and P 69.7 million for the Philippine Science High School, which is under the DOST, to subsidize 3,264 scholars.
