Seas around West Visayas (1)
The seas around the West Visayas are rich fishing grounds.
The Visayan Sea bounding Panay and Negros on the north and northwest is the richest fishing area in the country. The fish catch consists of the clupeidae (sardine) and scromridae (mackerels). Fish catch here is brought to Estancia, iloilo, making it the "Alaska of the Philippines" before the war.
Cuyo East Pass and Sulu Sea bouding Antique on the west are famous for deep sea fishing especially tuna fish. Antique coastal waters are also abundant in fries of bangus (milkfish) and lukon (tiger shrimp), which are used in the fishponds of the region.
Sapian Bay and Tinagong Dagat (Pontevedra Bay) which are parts of Sibuyan Sea are rich in bangus, alimango and kasag (mud crabs) and different kind of sea shells. These sea products make Roxas City the "Seafood Capital of the Philippines".
Banate Bay in Iloilo is rich in coastal fishes as well as bay-ad (a specie of capiz shell) and hipon (small shrimps). The coastal waters of southern Iloilo are dotted with fish nets (punot) from Tigbauan up to San Joaquin.
The coastal waters of Guimaras abound with banagan (lobsters) and other crustaceans and sea shells like imbao (a favorite delicacy). It has also a wide are of reefs which produce ornamental and decorative fishes of different kinds. It is also a virtual undersea garden teeming with sea weeds, among others is gulaman.
In Negros, the coastal waters of Valladolid are abundant in tahong and diwal (another delicious shell fish). The coastal waters of Talisay City and Silay produce the famous green shells while Sagay City coasts abound in sigay (cowries) after which the city is named.
Campomanes Bay off Sipalay City is the second deepest bay in the Philippines as is abundant in coastal fishes.
