Solon asks Palace to stop 'Bombay invasion'
Representative Rolex Suplico of Iloilo's fifth district is wary that the country is on its way to becoming the 'Bombay Republic' because of the growing Indian population.
The opposition congressman noted that Indian nationals, more known as 'Bombays,' are engaged in lending and retail trade. He pointed out that under the laws, only Filipino citizens can engage in lending and retail trade.
With this, he called on Malacañang and the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation to look into the growing number of Indian nationals in the country, determine their status, deport illegally staying as well as undesirable Indians and adopt a national policy on the country's growing alien population.
Indians compete "with Filipinos on trade, social services and our meager resources," he said.
Suplico said that "we cannot sell this country to the Bombays on an installment basis. We have to stop the motorcycle-riding Bombay invasion," apparently referring to the practice of some Indian nationals of collecting loans on installment basis using single motorcycles to go to their clients.
