Ateneo de Iloilo dominates broadcasting tilt
Ateneo de Iloilo's high school journalism team, the Ripples, bagged the championship tiara in the Department of Education's (in partnership with ABS-CBN Iloilo) Third Regional Broadcasting Conference at the Iloilo Central Elementary School and Robinsons Mall Iloilo over the weekend, January 20-21.
The school brought home the crown in the over-all production category both in the bracket A, composed of the first year and the second year, and the bracket B, comprised of the juniors and the seniors.
The Ateneans grabbed ix minor awards in the group competition and nine others for the individual contests.
"This conference aims to develop the communication skills of the students, their confidence and their service oriented spirits through responsible campus journalism," elaborated regional English supervisor Jude Iledan, organizer of the said event. "Ateneo once again did a splendid job."
Seven hundred students from about 35 private and public schools in the region participated to the regional competition for both the elementary and the high school levels, including the Saint Paul's School-Barotac Nuevo (SPS-BN), Santa Barbara National Comprehensive High School, University of San Agustin, Iloilo National High School (INHS), and Guimbal National High School.
Orientation about communication, script writing and broadcasting was conducted by Professor Aniceta Altis of the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas.
For bracket A, sophomore Glyzelle Dianne Ybiernas was recognized as most promising scriptwriter for radio broadcast. Nina Juan Loa, Jyska Kuan Ken, and Maryan Moquite, were awarded as promising newscasters. Freshman Zennia Turrecha was awarded third best.
Juniors Leslie Bayona and Trisha Ferraris were commended as most promising scriptwriters for radio broadcast. The most promising newscasters are Ann M. Sumalacay and Gretchen Legara.
The group of the bracket A hauled the first place for the Best Infomercial, Best Techinical Application that includes voice projection, Best News Presenters and Best in Script. Bracket B also seized the third place for the Best Infomercial, and the golds for the Best in Script and the Best in Technical Application.
Ateneo's bracket A team is composed of Jonathan Rene Tagamolila, Cathleen Gail Lim, Florentino Robles III, Venice Encajonado, Tyrone Bretaña, Sophia-Laureen Hiñola, and Bert Lorenz Divinagracia. Ybiernas also served as the group's director. Victor Robinson III, Russel Locsin, Regine Camille Garicia, Eddyl Tolentino, Mae Canong, Francis Jalbuena, and Kariza Espinosa completed the bracket B cluster.
For the first year and second year level, SPS-BN placed second while INHS got the second spot for the second and third year levels in the over-all production category.
"This contest is a part of our training. Our alma mater wants its students to be eloquent and confident enough as we do Magis, doing more, all for God's greater glory," said Lim, bracket A group main anchor.
For the past two years, AdI had been participating to the said seminar workshop and had bagged the championships. The team is supervised by Engr. Herman M. Lagon, the adviser of the Ripples.
Ripples is the official student publication of the AdI secondary department.
To note, the DepEd also invited grade school students to the competition. Ripples' counterpart in the grade school, the Pebbles, also landed first place and performed in the same level of dominance with that of its high school counterpart.
Other Ateneo High School participants to the said competition are Dori Anne Pagcaliwangan, Daphne Barce, Camille Denise Javellana, Zaire Janica Baccay, Marianne Mimi Solas, Trisha Ferraris, Leslie Bayona, Stephanie Enarbia, Valerie Ann Tamba, Richmond Fajardo, and Nanella Measures.
