IRC inmate mauled
A 35 year-old inmate of the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center (IRC) was hospitalized and remains in guarded condition following the injuries sustained when attacked inside the jail.
Detained for double-murder charges, Randy Legaspi of Poblacion, Concepcion, Iloilo was rushed to the Pototan Provincial Hospital early Wednesday afternoon. Attending physicians were initially told that Legaspi’s injuries were a result of a fall. Thorough check later made got the doctors to conclude that the inmate was mauled.
Hospital insiders confirmed the massive injuries of Legaspi amidst concerns raised on doctor’s findings of 50% numbness upon admission. The family is awaiting word on x-ray results done to verify extent of injuries blamed on his continued pain and numbness in his lower extremities and back. His body also bore visible signs of hematoma consistent to mauling.
Full recovery is expected in two to four weeks.
Legaspi when reached by Bombo Radyo Iloilo refused to name his attacker who is reported to be one of the jail guards on duty. The victim-inmate said the culprit has apologized and offered to help with his hospital expenses however at the end of the radio interview, Legaspi called on family members for assistance.
It was not clear what prompted the mauling, an incident long reported to have been regularly occurring inside the IRC.
The latest victims, jail insiders told TNT, were inmates Elmer Ferrer of Selda 57 and Mamerto Barranco of Selda 58. Barranco was one of the three escapees who later surrendered and now back to IRC detention.
Legaspi when asked of the duo’s mauling professed innocence on the incident saying he knows both but have no idea whether they too were attacked inside the jail.
