WHEN Bobby Soul of the 50s band, "The Platters", came to the Philippines, he saw the plight of the street children.
This led him to organize shows that will benefit them and one of these is a concert that will be held at Amigo Terrace Hotel at 8:30 tonight.
"I want to help a lot of people," Soul, who is active with charity works, said.
"This is the second time that I came to the Philippines. My first was eight years ago with Bernardo Bernardo. In tonight's show, Ilonggos will see something different," he said.
Soul, who used to perform alone, will be joined by 10 back-up singers and dancers as they dish out Broadway and cabaret classics. "We're even doing a Sister Act," he said.
They would also render Filipino folk dances.
The group had been practicing in the past 10 months and have toured several television shows to promote their concerts held in major cities in the country.
"This is an opportunity for us to show that not only Americans have talents, but Filipinos as well. Filipinos are a very talented people; all it takes are individuals who will give them the opportunity to showcase their talents," Soul said.
Soul started as a church singer at the age of six. His mother encouraged him to be a gospel singer, but he chose to become a pop musician. He became an understudy for The Platters when he was a teenager.
Soul is married to a Filipina since 1994 and they have a 10-year-old daughter, Tamika.
Also an actor, Soul has been accustomed to the Filipino taste. He's fond of pancit, adobo and fried tilapia.
However, Soul has a hard time learning Filipino songs. He blames his slow memory for that. However, he is still open to the challenge.
So, tonight, Ilonggos can expect a romantic experience as Soul will dish out some of The Platters' classics "The Great Pretender", "Twilight Time", "Smoke Gets in your Eyes", "My Prayer", "Heaven on Earth" and more.
"I will serenade you the whole night with music that touches the heart," Soul promises.
