Comelec to renew drive on illegal campaign materials
Commission on Elections (Comelec) Regional Director Renato Magbutay said they will once again start its drive against illegally posted campaign materials as the campaign period for local positions starts today.
Magbutay said candidates should only post their campaign materials on common poster areas designated by the Comelec. Designated as common poster areas are portions of the public plazas in the city's six districts.
Local Comelec operatives had already destroyed and confiscated illegally posted campaign materials of senatorial candidates.
Magbutay, however, said any violator of the Election Code will be subjected to a due process.
In the history of the Philippine politics, no candidate, from both local and national, was disqualified for violating the Comelec common poster areas.
Meanwhile, Magbutay reminded the candidates that they are prohibited to campaign on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
The Comelec regional director, however said candidates are not prohibited to act as sponsors of Lenten radio programs such as the Siete Palabras provided they are not endorsing themselves. Radio stations usually get their sponsors from politicians when airing Lenten programs.
