Res Gestae
So that the public may know
Today, we need leaders and not politicians. Hence, I enjoin everyone who cares for this country (or at least for himself or herself) not to be deceived amidst the showdown of TV ads, streamers, leaflets or all forms of campaign sorties for the coming May 14 election.
As evidenced by the alarming increase of campaign paraphernalia everywhere, many are coming (YES, they are just pretending!) in rescue of our educational system which is going down the drain, of the underdeveloped countryside, poor health services, lack of job opportunities, name it! The irony is that these are same, if not the closest kin of, persons who disguised themselves as "messiahs" in the past elections. In fact, while some have names that really sound familiar; many do look very familiar!
I always believe that many of the politicians who seek re-election to their previous positions have unfinished business. Even those who contend to run for a position lower than what they had previously held, after having been barred of "not-more-than-three-consecutive-term" rule, have surely similar reason.
Unfortunately, these "unfinished businesses" do not benefit the many of us. Unfinished businesses of re-electionist candidates are their personal interests to remain in power and enrich themselves at the expense of their dying constituents they promised to serve.
Look at our partylist movements. The anak pawis 12 years ago are still anak pawis today. It is so despite the millions of poor barrel received by their hailed representatives in Congress. Another, is there any significant decrease of violence against women or is there any program to empower our women after a Pro-women party list won a seat or two in Congress? What happened to our Manggagawang Pilipino? Are they now employed or at least manage a "sari-sari" store? What about the Kabataan? Are they now in schools? What happened to our Overseas workers? Of course, they are still overseas! And, the questions continue.
I don't think the culprits will agree with me but the truth truly hurts! Our marginalized sectors are being promised, capitalized and exploited during elections but they are left in oblivion once their supposed "messiahs" enjoy the comfort of Congress and of course of pork barrels.
The sad part of election is not confined with the party list movements alone. In fact, it cannot be denied that there are party list representatives who have worked and benefited the sectors that they have represented. The aspiring senators, congressmen, governors, board members, mayors and councilors are also flocks of wolves in sheep's clothing. Many of them run this election not actually to deliver their selfless service but primarily to advance their selfish interests. Thus, if we only judge the political candidates by their looks and rhetoric, we can easily be misled. Leadership cannot be equated with beauty and eloquence. The famous example to this is the biblical Moses who led the Israelites out of Egypt! Ergo, guard your decisions. For your votes would determine your future...our future! Vote wisely guys!
