New chapter
Life is like a novel. A previous chapter always prepares the reader on what lies ahead. Though one can't predict the story's ending, still, the road towards the completion of a novel, and in this case, a person's life, is set.
Mom taught me to be strong and to be ready for the future. It seems like everyday of my life under her parenting was a preparation for life and its challenges. Thus, during my teenage years, I always wanted to explore. There was no such thing as a comfort zone for me. Despite the pa-sweetums façade, I was fearless and rebellious.
But there came a time that I settled on a comfort zone. Bad move. We all know that comfort zones are the areas for the stagnant and the fearsome. You just don't want to take more risks because you're scared of what's out there.
Then, three years ago, a friend Rowena gave me this book in exchange for a script writing job. It's entitled "Who Moved My Cheese." It is a story about four characters --- two mice named Sniff and Scurry and two miniature humans named Hem and Haw who lived in a maze, a manifestation of our environment. They looked for cheese, which is a manifestation of happiness and success. These characters left the maze and searched for their cheese while some just didn't want to venture too far for fear that the cheese that they have would be stolen. In the end, the characters who ventured out found cheese while those who did not, went hungry. In summary, the story shows that change happen, one should anticipate and monitor change, adapt to and enjoy change, savor the adventure and enjoy change again and again.
Reading that book was a catalyst. I wanted to get out of that comfort zone. But then, the right time just didn't seem to happen. So, that wait for the "right time" dragged for three years.
When my husband died, I remained focus on my belief that things happen for a reason. So, amid the heartaches, I told myself, hey I went through this, surely I can handle another challenge to my comfort zone. I was in a fighting stance, ready to absorb more.
God blessed me with people who have made the "right time" come easy.
This guy I cared about since grade school taught me to embrace and go back to a simple life, the very one that my mother got me used to. He taught me to be flexible, and then I started to have a lot of fun, not really minding what the future has in store.
Then, there's one who shares my love for Carbonara. She said, "Just get out and do something courageous."
I was blessed with another friend who invited me to join her newspaper. Her trust in my abilities was a great motivation.
When I was in my decision-making stage, another friend who shares my passion for dogs, told me, "You win some, you lose some."
So, the pages towards a new chapter were gradually opened until I've decided to leave my comfort zone and tread into another territory.
Now, I'm with The News Today and I'm happy to work for a man whose professionalism, concern for his people and business acumen I've always admired since I was little.
This is the new chapter and it will be handled with hope, courage, dedication, faith ... and a whole lot of fun.
