We color our life
When friend Rofel invited me to be one of the judges in the Robinsons Place Iloilo Easter Egg Painting Contest for kids, I immediately said "yes."
The invitation was for Easter Sunday and what better way to celebrate part of that day than with children who share the same passion as I do --- art.
The invitation was for 1 p.m. and I was there before the contest started. Talk about being excited.
At one corner, I saw Tata of Stained Skin making a drawing of a sun on Rofel's hand. The corner was supposed to offer free FACE painting to children, but anyhow, being a kid at heart, I decided to have a flower done on my hand. Gina Apostol, an artist, joined us and made colorful fishes on her hand. She was also invited to be a judge in the said event and we were trying to have fun before the contest begins.
During the contest, it was fascinating to watch the 10 contestants work on the terracotta eggs made by Gina. One contestant was running around in between strokes. What a hyper kid. There's one who's making hip hop moves with his hands. It was, perhaps his way of gaining momentum for the work at hand. The quiet ones just worked their way on the egg without any fuss. Some just started into space trying to figure out what to draw.
When the contest ended, what used to be white eggs became colorful products of young minds --- hearts, bunnies, trees, butterflies and families holding hands.
Makes one think. First, an artist has an ability to transform a simple and plain object into something beautiful and inspiring. Second, children have the ability to make you see that we have the power and freedom to make our world colorful, just the way we want it to be --- pink trees, green bunnies, violet grass and a lot more.
So, sporting a pink flower with some blue, white and green additions on my hand, I had the time of my life.
